Mama Bross visits Bagel Mecca

by Larah Bross | 01 Nov 2018

Hey there Bagel Lovers, Mama Bross here with a further update from my adventures down the bagel hole. Now one of the advantages of being the proprietor of your own bagel emporium is I get to go on eating holidays or, for the purposes of my staff, “vital research trips!”.

So we’re all about the bagels and of course, there is only one place to go – Arbroath… no wait, that’s for smoked fish… I’m kidding, of course Montreal. There’s no flights to Arbroath anyway. I checked. The lady was very rude.

So I grew up in Montreal – which is probably why I love living in Edinburgh now. Old Montreal is very similar to Auld Reekie – the beautiful buildings, the cobbled streets, the bold lack of suitable clothing despite the freezing temperatures… very similar… and like Edinburgh, Montreal has some amazing places to eat.

Snowdon Deli – the oldest deli in town with a delicious cast list of traditional Jewish food the verenikas, the matzah balls, the gafilte fish, potato knishes, cheese bagelach, the karnautzel, even the schitzel was exactly how I remembered it. I know people who’ve never been there before who halfway through the meal – say this is exactly how I remembered it… The food is just that comforting.

Joe Beef – which I know sounds like the guy you want to avoid in a bar but trust me you cant go to Montreal without visiting this place. One of Anthony Bourdain’s favourite spots and if you want beef this is where it’s at. Like not like an argument… actual tasty beef.

Similarly if meet is your thing – then you have to go to Schwartz. This place hasn’t changed in years and is such an institution, was recently bought over by Celine Dion. Who knew Celine wanted to be associated so closely with dead meat? but that does not change the fact that this place is carnivore heaven and a must for any foodies.

We couldn’t visit Montreal without going to the bagel masters at St Viateur Bagel Shop. We got the whole tour, watched the process and at the end bowed down and offered up our first born. These guys are the Michael Angelo’s of bagel-making and we will forever fall in their shadow.

I did manage to do one thing of note apart from cramming food into my face and that was to accept an invitation to go back to my old school and talk about my transformation into this fully formed Madame Bagel you now see before you. Needless to say the children’s lives were transformed.. not by me but by a local bagel shop owner who had come to see me speak, brought bagels for all the kids and then took me back to his bagel shop for a tour and an armful of freebies.

And this is what I’m trying to tell you people. The world’s a mess right now – Bagels bring people together! Lets face it – at the end of the day, we’re all just a bit of dough with a hole in the middle. The question is – how you going to fill it?

Anyway I’m off for a run – I ate so much in Montreal I had to travel home in the hold. But we have loads of new ideas from our trip and thanks to all (too many to mention) who entertained and inspired us. Stay tuned to see what new surprises we have coming your way in the very near future.
